Trane Can Help You Navigate the Transition to Low-GWP Refrigerants

Changing to next-generation, low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants is critical to lowering the carbon impact of buildings and Trane is staying a step ahead. Learn how, from accessing your equipment needs, all the way to implementing and practicing new Trane field safety standards, we can help as you face the new industry requirements.

Changing to next-generation, low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants is critical to help lower the carbon impact of buildings. We are staying a step ahead by transitioning Trane products to these new low-GWP refrigerants and thoughtfully engineering our product changeovers to deliver the performance you’ve come to expect while prioritizing the climate.

We recognize each transition will be unique and what works in one building may not be an effective solution in another. That is why we collaborate with you and your team to identify the right solution for your facility. And we do this by helping you evaluate multiple options from direct 1:1 replacement, to new system types or retrofitting existing equipment.

Here is a closer look at how Trane can help as you face the new industry requirements:

Assess your equipment needs

Changing to this next generation of low-GWP refrigerants in general involves three choices: upgrade technology, change out refrigerants or, in some cases, carry on as usual. Trane makes optimal refrigerant decisions for our own products, determining when we need to change the way we operate and control equipment with next-generation refrigerants. We help you select the right option for your needs when a choice needs to be made based on our years of extensive testing. Plus, our Service Agreements can help extend the life of existing equipment to avoid end-of-use refrigerant release.

Mitigate site risks

Some transition plans will require system modifications. Trane can help you understand how to bring your HVAC system into compliance and our fully certified mechanical service technicians practice professional refrigerant handling in compliance with EPA Section 608. We provide accurate leak rate calculations, handle refrigerant activity recordkeeping and reporting and offer easy on-demand documentation access.

Manage leak detection

Our equipment allows you to monitor key information to help detect leaks early and comply with American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE®) Standard 15 requirements. Many units in our portfolio come with a standard factory installed leak detection system—taking any guesswork out of your tracking and reporting. For equipment where this is not the case, we can discuss whether constant remote monitoring with a building automation system makes sense for your application and what your field-installed options are.

Implement and practice new field safety standards and classifications

Trane is focusing on creating a better future for both building owners and the environment, by helping reduce carbon emissions and concurrently increasing safety and energy efficiency. Accordingly, all Trane technicians will complete new training from the ESCO Institute on safe refrigerant handling and will be equipped with the right tools for handling next-generation refrigerants. Plus, Trane Service Vehicles include a sealed partition for an added measure of safety.

As the industry transitioned to lower-GWP refrigerants with low flammability, ASHRAE created a classification called A2Ls, which are safe to use at home and in commercial spaces and result in a positive environmental impact compared to carbon dioxide (CO2). Fortunately, refrigerant leaks are small in our industry compared to CO2 emissions for fossil fuels.

Serve as your trusted partner

Selecting a collaborator you can trust is the first step in beginning your journey to next generation, low-GWP refrigerants. Trane has taken significant actions to support this transition through upgrades, changes and improvements and is ready and in compliance to serve as your trusted partner.
