BTU Crew Newsletter Volume #28: Reviewing the Big Picture

As we enter the last quarter of the school year and have state assessments and/or end of the year finals approaching, it is nice to have a variety of resources to help students review. Understanding the “big picture” as it relates to the flow of matter and energy is a major concept and fundamental to helping students understand the world around us. Weaving in multiple standards from what are often taught in separate science classes, this five minute TEDEd video, complete with review questions is one of the best we have found:

This is one of the things I really enjoyed about teaching Environmental Science as, much like the video, this class pulls from multiple areas of science and helps create more awareness of the inter-relationships in our world. Living in a world where students can literally access information in just seconds, helping them become more aware of these connections helps students see how these pieces of the puzzle must all work together for a society to be productive. It goes back to that Commoner’s Law of Ecology we have talked about earlier – “Everything is connected to everything else.”

We know April is a busy month, so hang in there and keep having fun with your students as you work to make the most of the weeks remaining. You are making a difference. Have a great week!
