Norton County Hospital’s existing chiller was more than twenty years old, and undersized for the growing facility. In addition, remodeling work completed several years ago resulted in a need for year-round cooling, which was putting an additional strain on the aging equipment. As a result, the hospital was experiencing serious comfort and reliability issues, particularly during summer months.

The two 750-ton Trane centrifugal chillers, in the twenty-year-old Willis-Knighton Medical Center chilled water plant, were taxed with providing comfort for the entire facility. The medical center sought upgrades to add capacity, control comfort, increase redundancy, and reduce energy costs, without a prolonged, disruptive construction outage. With the existing plant located in the basement, with little room for expansion, implementing upgrades would be a challenge.

The Laval Health and Social Services Centre (CSSS Laval) was created in 2004 as part of a government reform that brought together hospitals, local community services centers and residential care facilities in ninety-five territories in Quebec. With eighteen facilities located across Île Jésus, the CSSS Laval is the largest in Quebec. It includes one hospital with an integrated cancer center, four local community services centers (CLSCs), five residential care centers and an integrated first line care center. Due to Tropical Storm Allison in 2001, Baylor College of Medicine suffered a significant loss of research data when their below-grade central chiller plant flooded with more than five feet of water. Trane technicians were quickly on site to help in the central plant recovery efforts.

Chesapeake Regional Medical Center had developed plans for a 49,000 square feet expansion; however the existing chiller plant did not have the necessary cooling capacity to handle the additional floor space. The medical center also did not have any HVAC system redundancy and wanted to eliminate the CFC refrigerants in the existing chillers.

Intended as a plan and spec project, when initial cost estimates came in significantly over budget, Cleveland Clinic Florida moved to a design/build approach and established a team to reduce both design and construction costs without sacrificing building quality or functionality. Open communications between team members was emphasized. HKS Architects, a national firm headquartered in Dallas, Texas, designed the facility, using their extensive experience in health care facilities. The construction manager was Centex Rogers, headquartered in Nashville.

St. Margaret’s Daughters’ Home, located in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward, was virtually destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. While all residents were safely evacuated before the storm hit, the building was declared unsalvageable after it was flooded with up to six feet of standing water for two weeks. St. Margaret’s officials immediately began searching to find a new home for residents as quickly as possible. They found a new home in the former Bywater Hospital on St. Claude Avenue. Although suitable, the building needed total renovation of the HVAC systems that would require many months of work. Meanwhile, the residents and staff needed dependable heating and cooling systems to provide a comfortable, clean indoor environment.

As its name implies, Tallahassee Single-Day Surgery Center (TSDSC) doesn’t usually let problems linger. But the legendary heat and humidity of Tallahassee, Florida present challenges that are not easily conquered. Extreme summer heat and humidity make meeting strict surgical ventilation, humidity and temperature guidelines difficult—not to mention very expensive. With those extreme conditions, it’s not surprising that the performance from the 14-year-old rooftop unit provided reliably poor temperature and humidity control. It was time for an upgrade.
